6 Signs You May Not Be 'Hardcore'

6 signs you probably are not a hardcore gamer

You play all the right games , you play all the right systems. You make the wittiest comments to your friends in the hottest game forums. But are you a hardcore gamer? A trend follower? Or maybe even.... gasp! A casual gamer! Here are some signs to watch out for to determine whether you could be a 'hardcore' , 'casual' or just, well, a gamer.

Sign 1 - The Pirate

You claim to have played 75+% of all games ever made...but it was 95% ROMS and ISOs. Actually inserting the cartridge/disc and playing with the original controller is hardcore. Downloading a rom pack from the pirate bay -not so much. If the availability was not there to download games on whim, you would have just moved on to some other form of entertainment-hardcore movie buff maybe?

Sign 2 - The Noob
Your complete game console collection is countable on someone’s hand that had a few fingers cut off,  Considering the used prices of consoles, from the Dreamcast and Saturn to the NES and Super NES. If you don’t own at least a couple of those, you maybe just a casual gamer.

Sign 3 - The Lame
You use Metacritic or some other folly of a 'grading' system to justify or determine the quality of a game. No more needs to be said about that.

Sign 4 - The Weak
You complain that games are too easy. Yet you are a regular to GameFaqs, IGN Guides and other destinations for the casual gamer. You probably also have a cheat device such as a Game Shark. And if you fall into sign 1, you even go as far to use trained ROMS. Everyone gets stuck once in awhile. But if you tend to use a guide more then at the absolute breaking point of being stuck, you are not hardcore.

Sign 5 - The Confused Teenager
You consider hardcore a genre or a graphical style of games. You may even equate it to a certain style of game play. Reality is that it is all marketing hype aimed at a very sheep like demographic. Originality, being unique, and variety is a good thing.

Sign 6 - Casual HQ
GameStop is your primary game retailer.GameStop=Hot Topic of video game stores. Unless you get a discount or there is absolutely no other stores nearby and you can’t wait to get the game by mail through the net, why shop there? A magnet for the nerd version of douches, usually displaying all 5 signs above. Yeah and their prices suck.

Editors Note: This post has created quite a bit of hate towards hardcore gamers. Calling them losers or low-lifers, and other degrading names. VGPLAYR.com is for hardcore gamers to express opinions and whatever else gaming related material you like. We enjoy games to a much greater extent then your average gamer. If your interests aren't very varied or your just more of an avid gamer, then that is cool. Like what you like. There is no right or wrong. We don't bash any consoles. We respect and play classics games. Graphics are for the most part, irrelevant.Hardcore gaming is for fun, not to look cool or be above anyone. It is what it is. Although the post has generated a negative buzz, it in the end is a good thing as hopefully gamers will stop misappropriating the word as a 'coolness' label, and use it for what it is; our crazy obsession with gaming.

I agree. Hardcore gaming is being an Otaku, not about following trends. Whether that is 'cool' or not is kind of irrelevant. I think #7 should have been about importing. I paid 125$ for the Super Famicom Street Fighter 2 cart, to get a month early. That is hardcore.

LOL, I did the same. I used to import N64 games alot. Doreamon, Yuke! Yuke! Trouble Makers etc. I paid 115$ for the import Mario Kart 64, just 3 weeks before the US release. Glad I did as the voices in the US version were horrible!

This is an interesting article. Tons of systems and games. A huge variety of game types. Hardcore gaming is a lifestyle hobby. Nothing glamorous about it I guess, but hell its fun.

This post was great. It makes you think; what happened to the hardcore gamer? It seems to have died somewhat. The label 'hardcore' is now used as a marketing term. Just like 'extreme' 'punk' and every other keyword that has been distorted to grab peoples $ to make them feel like they fit in. Hardcore is about all gaming, no matter the console, no matter the computer and its specs, no matter the hand held. From the green screen Gameboy to a PSP. If you are hardcore you will play it.

I know. Too bad people are not actually reading the article. It is nothing bad. If your not a hardcore gamer, well no big deal. You like games and that is all that matters. I threw this out there for media manipulation to see reactions from the fanboy crowd. And it is funny, that you see more people saying they are not hardcore then before. ;) Looks like it worked.

I am glad people can relate. Its not a bad thing to just like games. You don't need every system to enjoy video games, or even know anything about them. You can only enjoy a particular system, or game genre. But just don't think you are a hardcore gamer.

LOL this article is getting picked up big time. Fanboys are starting to backpedal on their views of themselves as being harcore gamers. Like you said Jubei, its not bad, being any kind of gamer is cool. They are just not hardcore. The meaning needs to go back to what it was all about, before Microsoft distorted it.

From JubeiChan 115 days ago

Yeah it is. I'm surprised at the hate.I wrote this because I was tired of reading how the Wii wasn't for hardcore gamers(WTF!), and just for casuals. And other systems were, or how game A is hardcore but not game B, because of the graphics or whatever. Too much of that fanboy reporting. But whatever.

My favorite quote is calling you an 'egotistical bastard'. You are getting hated on big time. LOL, I think people are too sensitive, and are not reading it in context.

From MasterChief 115 days ago

What is bewildering is the amount of hate towards the real hardcore gamers from this. Whats up? its not cool to play allot of games? To have a wide variety of interests in them? People saying stuff like 'no-lifes' or whatever. Sad to read this stuff on supposedly hardcore gaming sites. But the flip side hopefully this 'outrage' will have some kind of change in the way the word is used. As it is kind of annoying.

The irony with all the hate is that if I would have wrote '6 signs the Wii is not hardcore' it would have been applauded, and all the hypocrites would have loved it.

good post. you didnt even bash any consoles or anything and got the point across of hardcore gaming. People are hating because they are not reading the article and are kinda thinking it is some rules you HAVE to follow instead of it is parody directed at the posers that seem to think they are too cool for certain games and systems.
